1.
we came across him in the park, supine on the ground, the dirt made way for his shadow. here is his body, rigid and still, a monochromatic sculpture. if he twitched or took a breath, we couldn’t see. perhaps he slept. perhaps he meditated. maybe he protested. we couldn’t say. we had already forgotten we had seen him.
the leaves were red and yellow.
2.
in remembrance of things past, adult cells maintain complete molecular memory of their embryonic origins.
3.
yellow is like red. yellow is the color of friendship and cake batter. the color of summer and new ideas. yellow is not gold. yellow is wisdom and winter hats. the healing bruise on your thigh.
martyrs are white or blue or red, depending on their path to holiness.
gold is not yellow. gold is hoop earrings and raisins. the color of epaulettes and teeth. gold is the color of saints and threads.
4.
swim with the swimmers, wrestle with wrestlers, march in line with the firemen, and pause, listen, count.
5.
it ends with white, greek sculptures. perhaps it was a misunderstanding. that led to a fallacy. which created a false impression.
but what if it wasn’t that complicated.
what if greek sculpture was full of color, and historians intentionally scrubbed bits of paint from sculpted marble bodies, whitewashing the objects. and we accepted this.
bright color is associated with the other, foreign, alien.
we have the power to tell the truth.
we are all aliens.
